MAGIC JOHNSON'S MOTHER (Ms. Christine Johnson) and Dr. Keshia Gaines- Black History Month

MAGIC JOHNSON'S MOTHER (Ms. Christine Johnson) is best known as the mother of Hall of Fame basketball player Earvin “Magic” Johnson Jr., and she played a central role in shaping his character and values from his youth in Lansing, Michigan. She worked hard to support her large family, helping raise seven children with her husband, Earvin Johnson Sr., and instilling in them a strong work ethic, faith, and perseverance despite financial challenges. Ms. Johnson was a devoted supporter of Magic throughout his basketball journey — attending his games from high school through his NBA career and encouraging him in both victories and struggles. Her influence extended beyond athletic encouragement; she emphasized moral integrity, spiritual grounding, and the importance of education and community service. While she is not primarily a public celebrity or performer herself, her role as a guiding force behind her son, as one of the most recognizable figures in sports — and her embodiment of family values and resilience — has made her respected and admired by many on a national and international level. Stay tuned to our "African-American Influencers" series on all social media platforms during February!
